From the Beaches to the Mountains

The invasion of Italy began on September 9, 1943, with the Salerno landings. The Allied forces faced fierce resistance from German troops, but they managed to establish a foothold on the Italian mainland. The fighting then moved north, with the Allies fighting their way through the mountains of central Italy.

One of the most difficult battles of the campaign was the Battle of Monte Cassino. The monastery of Monte Cassino was a key strategic point, and the Germans defended it fiercely. The Allies eventually captured the monastery in May 1944, but not before suffering heavy casualties.

The Allies continued to push north, and they eventually reached the Gothic Line, a series of German fortifications that ran across northern Italy. The Allies broke through the Gothic Line in April 1945, and they entered Rome on June 4, 1945.
