In 1981, journalist Michael Stone interviewed a man named Armin Meiwes, who had killed and eaten a young man named Bernd Brandes. Stone's book, Confessions of a Cannibal, is the only account of Meiwes's crimes that was ever published, and it remains one of the most shocking and disturbing true crime stories ever told.
Meiwes was born in Germany in 1961. He had a troubled childhood, and he was often bullied by his peers. As he got older, he became increasingly withdrawn and isolated. He began to fantasize about killing and eating someone, and in 2001, he finally acted on his urges.
Meiwes posted an ad on a website for people who were interested in cannibalism. Brandes, a 25-year-old engineer, responded to the ad, and the two men met at Meiwes's apartment in Rotenburg an der Fulda, Germany.
Meiwes killed Brandes by stabbing him in the neck. He then dismembered Brandes's body and ate parts of it. He also videotaped the entire process.
Meiwes was arrested a few days later, and he was eventually convicted of murder and cannibalism. He was sentenced to life in prison.
Stone's book Confessions of a Cannibal is a chilling and unforgettable account of Meiwes's crimes. Stone provides a detailed description of Meiwes's childhood, his fantasies, and his eventual descent into madness. The book also includes excerpts from Meiwes's videotaped confession, which are both horrifying and fascinating.
Confessions of a Cannibal is a must-read for anyone who is interested in true crime. It is a disturbing and thought-provoking book that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.
Excerpt from Confessions of a Cannibal
"I was born with this urge to kill and eat someone," Meiwes said. "I didn't know why I had it, but I knew that I had to do it. I tried to fight it, but I couldn't. It was stronger than me."
"I met Bernd Brandes online, and he seemed like the perfect victim. He was young, healthy, and he was willing to die. I knew that he was the one I had been waiting for."
"I killed him by stabbing him in the neck. It was quick and painless. I then dismembered his body and ate parts of it. I cooked his flesh and ate it with potatoes and vegetables. I also drank his blood."
"I enjoyed every minute of it. It was the most satisfying experience of my life."
