Chapter 1: The Golden Age of Hollywood

The Golden Age of Hollywood was a time of great glamour and excess. It was also a time when homosexuality was taboo. Many female stars were forced to live double lives, hiding their true selves from the public.

One of the most famous examples of this was Marlene Dietrich. Dietrich was a German actress who became one of the biggest stars in Hollywood in the 1930s and 1940s. She was known for her beauty, her style, and her magnetic personality.

But Dietrich was also a lesbian. She had a long-term relationship with the French actress Jean Gabin. However, Dietrich never publicly acknowledged her relationship with Gabin. She was afraid that it would damage her career.

Another famous example of a lesbian star from the Golden Age of Hollywood is Greta Garbo. Garbo was a Swedish actress who became one of the most iconic stars of the era. She was known for her beauty, her intelligence, and her aloofness.

Garbo was also a lesbian. She had a long-term relationship with the American actress Mercedes de Acosta. However, Garbo never publicly acknowledged her relationship with de Acosta. She wanted to maintain her image as a mysterious and unattainable star.

Chapter 2: The Lavender Scare

The Lavender Scare was a period of anti-homosexual hysteria in the United States that lasted from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. During this time, thousands of homosexuals were fired from their jobs, blacklisted from the entertainment industry, and even imprisoned.

The Lavender Scare had a devastating impact on female stars. Many lesbian stars were forced to give up their careers or live in hiding. Others were subjected to blackmail and extortion.

One of the most famous examples of a lesbian star who was targeted during the Lavender Scare is Dorothy Arzner. Arzner was a pioneering director who became one of the most successful female directors in Hollywood history.

Arzner had a long-term relationship with the screenwriter Marion Morgan. However, Arzner never publicly acknowledged her relationship with Morgan. She was afraid that it would damage her career.

In 1958, Arzner was subpoenaed by the House Un-American Activities Committee. She was accused of being a communist and a lesbian. Arzner refused to cooperate with the committee, and she was blacklisted from the entertainment industry.

Chapter 3: The Stonewall Riots and Beyond

The Stonewall Riots were a series of spontaneous demonstrations by members of the LGBTQ community in response to a police raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York City on June 28, 1969. The riots are considered to be the beginning of the modern LGBTQ rights movement.

The Stonewall Riots had a profound impact on female stars. For the first time, lesbian stars felt more comfortable coming out and speaking their truth.

One of the first lesbian stars to come out after the Stonewall Riots was Martina Navratilova. Navratilova is a Czechoslovakian-born American tennis player who won 59 Grand Slam titles during her career.

Navratilova came out as a lesbian in 1981. She was one of the first major female athletes to come out. Her decision to come out was a groundbreaking moment for the LGBTQ community.

Since the Stonewall Riots, there have been a growing number of female stars who have come out and spoken their truth. These women are breaking down the barriers of prejudice and discrimination, and they are inspiring others to do the same.

The female stars who loved other women are a hidden history of Hollywood. These women have faced tremendous prejudice and discrimination, but they have also shown great courage and resilience.

In this book, we have celebrated the lives and careers of these groundbreaking women. We hope that their stories will inspire others to live their lives authentically and to fight for what they believe in.
