Sol Wachtler was a brilliant and ambitious judge who rose to the pinnacle of the New York State court system. But behind his public persona as a tough-on-crime judge, Wachtler was secretly struggling with drug addiction and mental illness.

In 1992, Wachtler's life spiraled out of control when he was arrested for soliciting a prostitute. The arrest led to a series of revelations about Wachtler's drug use and mental health problems, ultimately forcing him to resign from the bench in disgrace.

But Wachtler's story is not just a cautionary tale about the dangers of addiction and mental illness. It is also a story of redemption and hope. After his arrest, Wachtler sought treatment for his addiction and mental health problems. He eventually rebuilt his life, becoming a successful author and lecturer.

In his memoir, Have Gavel, Will Travel, Wachtler tells the story of his rise and fall, and his ultimate redemption. The book is a fascinating and moving account of one man's struggle with addiction, mental illness, and the justice system.
